Learning and teaching

Our commitment to teaching

The Faculty aims to provide an excellent student learning experience in an environment enriched by research so that students may develop intellectually and individually.

The Faculty is justifiably proud of its teaching and has an excellent record in reviews carried out by the Quality Assurance Agency and other bodies. We are committed to building on this success.

Education at Bristol means providing students with an excellent teaching and learning experience in an environment in which they can manage their programme of study according to their needs.

This environment is designed to:

• Support the learning and cultural needs of students from diverse backgrounds,
• Nurture a community where learning is valued for its own sake,
• Enable students to develop personally and academically, so that they reach their potential throughout their programmes of study, are encouraged to become lifelong learners, and to acquire the skills they will need in their chosen career and other aspects of their lives,

In parallel, we aim to offer a range of personal, sporting and cultural experiences that enable students to develop as individuals.

Teaching staff

Staff in the Faculty work on medical and veterinary science research and applied clinical work.   Their teaching reflects this research at every level, whether in individual units or programmes.

Programmes

Undergraduate and Postgraduate programmes taught in the Faculty are regularly updated to ensure that units are current, relevant and reflect the latest research. Programme and Unit Catalogues provide detailed information on what you will be studying.

How we teach

Learning and teaching may be offered in these ways:

• Clinical activities (as appropriate)
• Independent learning by the student e.g. research on a topic
• Group learning
• Blackboard (on-line) resources

Student feedback

Students who study in the Faculty are encouraged to feed back on their experience at the end of each unit and programme that they complete.  This feedback is used to improve programmes and units every year.

Learning and teaching facilities

Students in the Faculty can access the following facilities during their studies:

• Libraries and IT rooms – Medical School Library, Veterinary School Library, Arts and Social Sciences Library
• Computing rooms - in the Computing Centre, Medical School Library, Veterinary School Library.  Some University halls of residence are equipped with IT facilities
• Seminar rooms - in most departments
• On-line resources - 'Blackboard'
• Subject specific teaching facilities:

Applied and Integrated Medical Sciences Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (AIMS CETL) – including Human patient simulator, Clinical Anatomy suite, Virtual Microscope, Clinical Veterinary Facilities.
