Background
I studied at the Université de Poitiers in France and at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands where I gained my MA in Romance Languages and Cultures (2001). I have worked as a teaching and research fellow at the University of Groningen where I also completed my PhD in 2009.
Research interests
Nineteenth and early twentieth century French cultural history and literature, in particular the Belle Époque. I have previously published on the work of Alfred Jarry and I am currently working on the relationship between literature and journalism. I am especially interested in the dynamic between aesthetics and politics, the writer as intellectual and political commitment.
I was awarded a British Academy postdoctoral fellowship for a research project entitled ‘Sleeping with the enemy? French writers and the press 1890-1918’
For this project I will investigate the close bonds between literature and journalism in late nineteenth century and early twentieth century France. I am interested to see how this connection between literature and journalism affected the literary work of authors working in journalism. I will look at how these bonds influenced the aesthetics as well as the contents and politics of their literary texts. In addition, I will look at writers’ literary aesthetics might have shaped their journalism, their views and public commitment to social and political issues.
