A Tribute to Emeritus Professor Michael Freeman

Professor Michael Freeman

Colleagues and students were deeply saddened to learn of the death of Professor Michael Freeman in April 2009, a little more than a year after his retirement. Professor Freeman was formerly Ashley Watkins Professor of French Language and Literature. He specialized in French literature of the late-medieval and early modern periods, with a lifelong interest in the fifteenth-century Parisian poet François Villon. As well as writing extensively on him (including a monograph, François Villon in his Works: The Villain's Tale, published in 2000), he jointly organised four colloquia on Villon (Paris 1989, 2002, 2006 and Oxford 1996). He was also the author of the standard edition of the works of the satirical poet and dramatist Guillaume Coquillart, and edited comedies by Pierre de Larivey and Etienne Jodelle. He published on a variety of sixteenth-century authors, from François Rabelais to Pierre de Ronsard and Michel de Montaigne. His other research areas included the reception of medieval literature (notably François Villon) in the nineteenth century, and Portuguese literature and history (articles on Luís de Camões and Fernando Pessoa). In 2003 he co-organised a conference in Oxford on literature and dance. He was a member of the Editorial Board of the journal French Studies from 1990 onwards, becoming General Editor in 1997. He was a Chevalier dans l'Ordre des Palmes Académiques.
