Siobhán Shilton was appointed to the Department in 2005. She specialises in postcolonial studies, with particular reference to the cultures of France, the Maghreb, sub-Saharan Africa and former ‘Indochina’ (she has also worked on Iranian graphic literature in French). She is currently working on photography, video, installation and performance art exploring cross-cultural identities, and is completing a book entitled Transcultural Encounters: Journeys between France and the Maghreb in Contemporary Art, following an AHRC Research Leave Award. She is co-author (with Charles Forsdick and Feroza Basu) of New Approaches to Twentieth-Century Travel Literature in French: history, genre, theory (Peter Lang, 2006), and has published articles on the subjects of travel, exile, colonialism and postcolonialism in literature and the visual arts.

Siobhán teaches twentieth- and twenty-first-century cultural studies, as well as French language. She would especially welcome applications for postgraduate study in the areas outlined above.
