Leverhulme Trust Early Career Fellowships

For early career researchers, with a research record but who have not yet held a full-time permanent academic post, to undertake a significant piece of publishable work.

When to apply

  • The internal application process is now open.
  • Applications to the scheme open on the Leverhulme website on 1st January 2024 and close 22nd February 2024.
  • Apply within four years of getting your PhD, career breaks can be taken into account.
  • To apply, you must have a research record but will not yet have held a full-time permanent academic post.

How to apply through the University of Bristol

The Faculty of Social Sciences and Law is carrying out an internal selection process for this scheme:

  1. Potential applicants identify a potential mentor and make contact with them.
  2. Potential candidates write a draft outline application on the internal Leverhulme outline form (contact rd-fellowships@bristol.ac.uk for a blank copy) with the help of their mentor and submit it, together with a two-page combined CV/publication list, by email to the appropriate School Research Director (see below) by 10am, Monday 13 November 2023 for all Schools.
  3. School Research Director/Schools will review drafts with potential mentors, to assess applicants' intellectual fit within the Department. 
  4. Schools select suitable candidates, rank them and forward applications to DREI by 5pm, Wednesday 22 November 2023  
  5. The Faculty (Dean and FRD) will select their candidates for submission to Leverhulme. DREI will advise SRDs of the final selection, and SRDs will notify candidates by 7 December 2023
  6. DREI will host a training session for selected applicants on 13 December, as such, please keep this blocked out in your diary.
  7. DREI Research development will provide additional support and copies of successful bids to the final selected candidates only.
  8. 1 January 2024 Leverhulme call opens. 
  9. Funder deadline 22 February 2024 – NOTE: applicants will be required to submit the application internally one week before the deadline.
