A team of geographers in the School has secured partial funding for an on-line exhibition of rare and unique atlases housed in the University of Bristol's Library collections. The team, led by cartography expert, Veronica della Dora, are in the process of curating and building an open and publicly accessible on-line exhibition of selected images from atlases largely housed in the Special Collections Library. Members of the team, Harriet Hawkins, Mark Jackson, and David Richards are also contributing their time, energy and knowledge to the project.

The economic climate has made Britons more pessimistic about their future financial situation than they were a year ago, reflecting a general international trend towards increased financial anxiety, according to the latest research from the University’s Personal Finance Research Centre (PFRC).

As part of a feature about Geoengineering, Dr Joy Singarayer, Research Fellow and Lecturer in Oceanography and Allied Climate Modelling discussed the idea that making crops more shiny could help in the mitigation of climate change.

At the annual Faculty of Social Sciences and Law Research Day, held 3 November, human geography student Caroline Wright won the Post-graduate Poster Award for her research on "What factors influence whether young people stay on in post-16 education in the county that used to be Avon?".

Professor of Earth System Modelling, Professor Andy Ridgwell talked to Evan Davis on BBC Radio 4's The Today Programme. Andy, along with Professor Paul Valdes and Dr Joy Singarayer are involved in a 2 day conference at The Royal Society entitled 'Geoengineering - taking control of our planet's climate'. The meeting considers the state of geoengineering as a new science, and its implications to society.

Geographical Sciences School Manager, Dr Giles Brown, will be awarded the AUA Fellowship Award for his contribution to the Association. The award will be collected by Dr Brown during the AUA 13th Annual Lecture which is being held at the Grand Connaught Rooms, London on the evening of Tuesday 2 November.

The School of Geographical Sciences has been successful in winning funding for two separate projects in the "Long Term Co-evolution of Life & the Planet" programme, run by the Natural Environment Research Council. The programme was set up to support interdisciplinary research into periods of major physical or biological change in the geological record, and their relationship to carbon and oxygen cycles.

The journal Geoscientific Model Development ("GMD") has been selected by Thomson Reuters to be listed in their Citation Index. School of Geographical Sciences staff members Dr Dan Lunt, Prof Andy Ridgwell, and Prof Paul Bates are all on the editorial board. The listing hugely raises the profile of the journal, which was founded by Dan and Andy and others in 2008.
