Simulating the floodplain wetting and drying processes for a reach of the Amazon river, Brazil

Research summary

My research aims to simulate the floodplain wetting and drying processes of a 200 x 300 km reach of the Amazon river situated 250 km upstream from Manaus, Brazil. Accurately simulating these processes is important for understanding the precise role of the floodplain in transferring the annual Amazon River flood pulse from the upstream end down to its mouth. This transfer impacts upon the biogeochemical cycle of the Amazon basin, for example through the evasion of CO2 and CH4, which is hypothesised to affect the global climate (Richey et al., 2002).
