Research summary

I am a human geographer specialising in cultural and historical geography. My research focuses on cultures of nature and their interactions between humans, non-humans and landscapes. To date I have carried out research into a major museum collection of birds’ eggs and the cultural contexts of collecting practices, knowledge production, wildlife conservation, and museum curation and display. I have also researched early travellers’ responses to Scottish waterfalls, and I aim to extend this work into a wider study of British waterfalls as landscape sites of cultural significance, examining their contested value for aesthetic appreciation, leisure amenity, and harnessing for industry ...

Biography

I obtained my BA in Physics and Philosophy from the University of Oxford and my MSc in Environment, Culture and Society from the University of Edinburgh. My PhD, awarded in 2016, was an AHRC-funded Collaborative Doctoral Award with the University of Glasgow and Glasgow Museums. At Glasgow I also taught undergraduates, performed outreach activities for secondary school pupils, and worked on research projects investigating the impact of zoonotic diseases in Tanzania and ‘Visualising Violence in Malawi’. I have been working as a Senior Teaching Associate at the University of Bristol since January 2018.
