Research summary

My research examines the ways that cities and urbanisation are (and have been) governed, focusing on sub-Saharan Africa within the wider context of the global South. I am interested in how urban processes relate to questions of food security and health, and the various ways in which these links have been problematized and addressed. In doing so, I work at the interface between the historical and contemporary, as well as the empirical and theoretical.

James joined the University of Bristol in April 2019 as a Senior Research Associate working on the IUSSP Family Planning, Fertility and Urban Development project funded by the Gates Foundation. He holds an undergraduate degree in biosciences from Rhodes University, Master of Town and Regional Planning from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, MA Urban History from the University of Leicester, and a PhD from the University of Cape Town (UCT). He joined the African Centre for Cities at UCT as a researcher in 2010, where he worked to enhance planning education and urban research in sub-Saharan Africa through the Association of African ...
