Research summary

Sarah Alvarez (née Sarah O'Dea) is a Senior Research Associate and Nannofossil specialist currently working on the ERC-funded PALEOGENiE project, exploring past links in the evolution of oceans global environment and ecology.

Her research uses the geological record of calcareous nannoplankton to explore their response to past climate change and ocean acidification throughout the Cenozoic, with a particular focus on the early Paleogene (~65 to 40 million years ago). She is particularly interested in understanding the significance of abrupt climate change for nannoplankton populations, and  the factors that control the long-term evolution and biogeography of marine ecosystems.
