Postgraduate opportunities in physical and human geography
The School of Geographical Sciences is a leading international centre for research and scholarship. It has been awarded the top 5* rating in every UK Government assessment of research excellence. The Graduate School is integral to this success. Our postgraduate programmes bring together a large and vibrant graduate community, focusing both on PhDs by research and on taught courses through the renowned MSc in Human Geography: Society and Space , the MSc in Environmental Policy and Management and the MSc in Climate Change Science and Policy.
The School provides high-quality dedicated work-space for its graduate students. MSc students have their own room in the main School buildings, while PhD research students have their own suite of rooms in the newly refurbished offices just along from the School on University Road.
The graduate community has a strong international and interdisciplinary flavour, and offers an exceptional academic environment for postgraduate research.
We provide our PhD students with close supervision by leading academics in their fields, research training and development through our Masters Degree (in the case of human geography) and other forms of assessment, dedicated graduate workspace, and a range of other academic events such as workshops, reading groups and seminars. A high proportion of our postgraduates go on into academic posts, many others use their postgraduate degree to secure a position in industry, government, and research in the public and private sectors.

A number of academic and administrative staff are involved in the administration of the Graduate School. Dr Jim Freer is Head of the Graduate School and Postgraduate Tutor in Physical Geography. Dr David Manley is Postgraduate Tutor in Human Geography. Dr Veronica della Dora is the MSc in Human Geography: Society and Space Course Director. Dr Malcolm Fairbrother is the MSc in Environmental Policy and Management Course Director. Dr Dan Lunt is the MSc Course Director in Climate Change Science and Policy.
