The Quantitative Spatial Science group leads the undergraduate Spatial Science courses within Geographical Sciences, in all years, consisting of rigorous hands-on basic statistical, GIS, advanced spatial modelling and multi-level modelling curricula. We take pride in ensuring that, by the time they graduate, all our students possess exceptionally strong and advanced numerical skills, which they often make use of in their future careers.

We are also active in the new Bristol Q-Step Centre strengthening quantitative skills training for undergraduates, with Dr Rich Harris leading the University of Bristol's contribution to this initiative. At the postgraduate level, the group contributes to the Advanced Quantitative Methods pathway of the South West Doctoral Training Partnership, with Dr David Manley centrally involved in MSc-level methodological training. The SWDTP provides funding and a range of statistical courses to PhD students. Less methodologically and more thematically, Dr Sean Fox directs the School of Geographical Sciences' MSc in Environmental Policy and Management. Both he and David Hayes teach modules on that programme.

The group has many links to Bristol's Centre for Multilevel Modelling (Professor Kelvyn Jones is a co-director). Members regularly contribute to workshops on multilevel modelling, such as (but not only) those organised by the CMM.

Dr Tony Hoare, an emeritus member of the group, leads the University's Widening Participation Research, which aims to improve policy and practice regionally and nationally and shape the university's own efforts to attract and support a diverse student body.
