Our Building Global Engagements in Research (BGER) grant, funded by the EPSRC, exceeded our original expectations. The grant, lead by Professor Guy Orpen (Pro Vice-Chancellor, Research), produced partnerships across the EPSRC remit enabling Bristol researchers to make significant developments in their international collaborations.
It also provided rare opportunities for young researchers and students to engage with international experts, increasing their skills, techniques and understanding.
Right: Dr Charl Faul, School of Chemistry, with students at Tsinghua University. Bristol has been able to make a step change in its long term partnerships with several leading Chinese universities.
We chose four pathways to help foster international research and the development of Bristol’s global links and relationships:
1) Built on the institutional framework with Kyoto University
2) Developed existing bilateral partnerships
3) Promoted nascent partnerships by supporting projects through a competitive internal fund
4) Developed multilateral networks in key University of Bristol research areas

The grant supported 54 principal investigators who worked with almost 90 external partners across 16 countries. Please take a look at this BGER leaflet if you would like to find out a little more about the project. You can also browse this interactive map which shows all the projects around the world and the external partners our researchers engaged with.
If you have any questions regarding the project please email Simon Glasser (s.glasser@bristol.ac.uk).
