Students come from all over the world to study at the University of Bristol, sharing their culture and experiences, and contributing to the vibrancy of university life. Overseas students make up 12 per cent of the total undergraduate student body, 35 per cent of postgraduate taught students and 26 per cent of postgraduate research students (figures for 2011/12). The international experience at Bristol enriches both incoming and outgoing students, as well as the city itself.
Bristol has been welcoming international students for more than 50 years. We are one of the most diverse universities in the UK, with students from 120 countries. The University is particularly popular with students from China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, the USA and India, but we also have many students from continental Europe and welcome applicants from all countries.
International experience is an important part of life at the University of Bristol. Students come from all over the world to study here, either on full undergraduate or postgraduate courses or as part of the Study Abroad programme, which enables students registered elsewhere to earn transfer credit at Bristol. Exchange students bring with them their own cultural and educational styles, enhancing the academic environment for their peers.
Home students are also encouraged to take advantage of the many overseas study opportunities available to them. Every year, more than 500 Bristol students go abroad as part of their degree, giving them the opportunity to develop language skills and experience new cultures. Depending on their degree, students have the choice of working and/or studying abroad for anything between three and 12 months, in English-speaking universities as well as in those requiring European languages.
More information on the University's exchange programmes and partner institutions is available on the Year Abroad website.
The diversity of students and local residents gives Bristol a truly international vibe and contributes to the supportive, tolerant atmosphere. Studying here has allowed me to share my culture with others, and learn about people from other backgrounds and countries.
