BADACA events

Dear Bristol University UCU members,

This is to invite you to 2 events organised by Bristol & District Anti Cuts Alliance. All details below:-

Invite to: Bristol & District Anti Cuts Alliance & Unite the Resistance public meeting:

'How We Can Win' with Mark Serwotka, PCS union
On: Monday, 6 February 2012
At: 19:30 until 21:30
In: The Council House, College Green, Bristol BS1 5TR

Bristol University UCU members (and all staff) are invited to an open meeting to discuss the way forward for the campaign to defend jobs, pensions and public services. Mark Serwotka of the PCS union is one of the main speakers. He and his union the PCS have rejected the government's latest offer on public sector pensions because it offers no improvement on the increase in retirement age, the increase in contributions, and/or the switch in indexation from RPI to CPI. The PCS union also covers tax collectors and job centre workers, and they have produced some superb information on tax evasion and avoidance arguing that rather than attacking the poor and vulnerable in society (as the City Council are doing – see below) these areas should be targeted first. Come and show your support.

Lobby of City Council's budget setting meeting:
On: Tues 28th Feb
At: 13:00 - 14:00 & 17:30
In: The Council House, College Green, Bristol BS1 5TR

The LibDems' draft budget for 2012/3 means cuts of more then £21 million on top of £30 million pounds this year. 350 jobs will go. Services will be privatised. Services will close. Charges will increase. The headline services being targeted for closure and/or privatisation are care homes for the elderly and vulnerable, and youth services. But the cuts will extend into the full range of the council's services. The budget will be agreed on February 28th but the details of the closure/privatisation of the facilities and their impact on users and the wider community won't be announced until mid-March. BADACA say that unless the details are made known now the closure/privatisation policy should be removed from the budget.

More details

Come & join BADACA at our lobby of the council's budget setting meeting on Tuesday 28th February. Assemble at 1pm for the 2pm meeting- plus we will re-assemble outside at 5.30pm for those working during the day. Of course we will also be keeping up the pressure from the public gallery!
