Abbey-Santander Scholarships
Total budget = £15,000 (Each prize to be worth £1,000)
Maximum of 15 prizes to be awarded annually
Deadlines: From 2008/2009 the deadline for applications for the Banco Santander Prizes should be 15 February. This will enable students to know whether they have received a prize before committing themselves to a Latin American placement.
The Aim of the Prizes: The Prizes will support existing links between Bristol and Latin America. The Prizes should help to counteract the effects of the Year Abroad Fees issue, which has led to numbers of Y2 students choosing Latin American placements falling dramatically this year.
Priority for the Prizes:
The Prizes should be awarded after consideration of three factors:
- Students on established placements in Latin America.
- Overall performance in Y2 TB1 units, including language.
- Application form.
1. Students should apply for one of our established placements in Latin America.
These are:
a) University Exchanges: Bristol has established exchanges with:
- Universidad Nacional de Colombia, Sede Medellín
- Universidade Federal de Santa Catalina (Florianópolis, Brazil)
- Universidade Federal de Santa Maria (Brazil)
- Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile
- Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara, México
- A consortium of universities in México. D.F.
- In addition, students choosing to study at other Latin American universities will also be eligible for the Banco Santander Prizes.
b) Established Work Placements
These ‘official’ placements are ones which have been receiving Bristol undergraduates for several years and/or have been visited in the last three years by academic staff from Bristol. They are:
- Teaching placement at the Universidad de Ibague, Colombia
- Administration post, British-Ecuadorian Chamber of Commerce, Quito
- Administration placement at Café Cultura Hotel, Quito, Ecuador
- Administration placement at APEX cultural foundation, Quito
- Research post at Afro-Ecuadorian Cultural Centre, Esmeraldas, Ecuador
- Teaching placement, BritishSchool, Colegio Craighouse, Santiago de Chile
- Teaching placement at the Colegio Concepción in Pedro de Valdivia, Chile
- Teaching placements in the English Immersion Programmes, Argentina
- Placement at the GEM Project, Salvador, Brazil
c) British Council Teaching Assistantships
In Latin America only (Spain and Portugal are covered by Erasmus grants)
d) Other Placements
In the event that the above placements do not reach 15, students who have found other work placements will be considered for the prizes. However, absolute priority will go to students on the placements listed in a-c.
2. Overall performance in Y2 TB1 units
An average will be taken of TB1 HiPLA language marks and HiPLA content unit marks. Performance in Latin American focused units may be considered.
3. Application form
The quality of a short ‘Why I would like to go to Latin America …’ application form will be assessed by the committee.
Alternatively you could ask Dr. Francisco J. Romero Salvadó for an application form.
