I am responsible for strategic planning for ILRT - the R&D function of the University's IT Services - ensuring that the University benefits from innovation in the use of technology for research and learning, underpinned by a balanced portfolio of activity and a sustainable financial model.
I lead a multi-disciplinary team that explores, prototypes and pilots future technologies, standards and new media for higher education, that advises on technical and data aspects of research bids and partners with academic departments at Bristol and other universities in externally-funded projects. Our 'future watching' role helps facilitate the effective use of a wide range of technologies and media to enable learning, research and information management.

I have led and been co-applicant in a wide range of projects and services in ILRT since 1995 at national and European levels, particularly exploring the use of ICT and digital scholarship in the social sciences and arts and humanities, research information management and sustainable ICT. I have reviewed ESRC, EU and JISC project proposals in these areas.
I hold a Visiting Senior Research Fellowship at King's Learning Institute, King's College London. Nationally I am a member of the Board of Management of MIMAS (University of Manchester) and elected director of JISC Advance. I am a member of UCISA's Staff Development Group and the national Organisational Development in Higher Education network.
I am also seconded half-time to the Leadership Foundation for Higher Education as Director, Publications and Organisational Development.
My early career in the University was in HR/staff development, with particular responsibility for HR systems (locally and through a national project) and development of research staff and postgraduates. I continue to be a member of the University's Research Staff Working Party.
I am particularly interested in how people can work with and through technology to enable new forms of research and to help discover, connect and present data (including images, text etc) for learning, research and management processes. I am also interested in organisational development and learning and the strategic use of technology in higher education.
In my spare time I enjoy travelling, family history research and the occasional sip of real ale.
I have developed and delivered a wide range of training in the use of the Web, and have taught on the MSc Education, Technology and Society (Graduate School of Education, University of Bristol) on qualitative research methods and virtual teams in education.
