Meningitis is a very uncommon disease but can be life threatening. The University of Bristol has devised a plan of action to be implemented in the event of an individual case or an outbreak of meningitis among its students. In conjunction with Health Protection Agency (HPA), it has arranged for the rapid tracing of contacts of any students affected and for vaccination and antibiotics to be offered, on a large scale if necessary. If required, the University will also implement a large-scale information programme and arrange for a special information helpline to be available.
The illness can develop rapidly and patients may become seriously ill within a few hours. If you have sudden onset of the signs and symptoms below or observe them in someone else, you should seek immediate medical help from the Students' Health Service the normal working hours telephone number is +44 (0)117 330 2720; the out-of-hours telephone number is +44 (0)117 330 2721or call 999.
