Traditional and Genetic Risk Factors for Coronary Heart Disease: First versus Subsequent Events

Abstract

Patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) have high long-term morbidity and mortality, yet our ability to identify or intervene in those at greatest risk is limited. Risk factors for subsequent CHD events have been understudied with an assumption that they are likely to precisely overlap with those for first CHD events. Our group is testing the hypothesis that differences in risk factor associations in these two settings could exist, which in turn may inform (1) better risk prediction (2) mechanistic insights and (3) new drug development for secondary prevention. We are examining, at scale, the association of selected genetic and phenotypic CHD risk factors with risk of subsequent CHD events by utilizing previously unavailable resources, harnessing large scale data through linked electronic health records of 15 million UK patients, a new global consortium of CHD cohorts with genotyping and the UK Biobank.

Biography

Dr Riyaz Patel is a British Heart Foundation clinical intermediate fellow and consultant cardiologist at UCL and Barts Health NHS Trust. He trained in London and also worked in the USA at Emory University where he was involved in early GWAS for coronary artery disease, funded by the American Heart Association. He works both at the Farr institute of Health Informatics Research and at NICOR in London. His research interests revolve around studying coronary artery disease through use of large scale data.  He is also the PI of the GENIUS-CHD consortium, a global collaboration of CHD studies established to improve understanding of subsequent CHD event risk (www.genius-chd.org).

Professor Aroon Hingorani is currently UCL Chair of Genetic Epidemiology and Honorary Consultant at UCL Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. His research applies genomic data to help identify new drug targets for heart disease prevention and treatment. Together with colleagues he runs a specialist blood pressure clinic and looks after patients with cardiovascular and general medical problems. He has been the Director of the UCL Institute of Cardiovascular Science since 2011.
