Any University of Bristol students whose course lasts for six months or longer is entitled to free treatment under the National Health Service. National Health Service treatment covers consultation with general practitioners, and hospital treatment for conditions that arise while you are in the UK. It does not cover treatment for pre-existing medical conditions. If medicine is prescribed by a general practitioner, a prescription charge is made.
You should note that you are not covered by the National Health Service until you have registered as a student with the University.
Thus you will not be covered if you require hospital treatment as a result of an accident, injury or illness on your journey to Bristol or during the days in Bristol prior to your registration with the University. It is recommended that you take out health insurance in your own country to cover this period.
When you arrive in Bristol you will need to register with a doctor. Most students register with the Students’ Health Service (based at Hampton House Health Centre, St Michael's Hill, Clifton) if their accommodation is within the practice area. Otherwise you may register with a local doctor of your choice.
European Union students should ensure that they have a valid European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) before they come to Bristol (full details in the EHIC section). These forms entitle the bearer to free or reduced cost medical treatment in the EEA countries. See the section on EEA
