Support and advice for international students

We hope the following may help you make your preparations to come to the UK and plan your journey to Bristol and the University.

Arrival

Living

Help and guidance on applying for immigration permission (a visa) is provided by our International Student Advisors whether you are coming to the UK for the first time, moving to the University from another university, or extending your student visa. If you are a Tier 4 visa holder, please ensure that you read the Visa Conditions leaflet carefully to ensure you understand your and our obligations to the UKBA.

  • UKCISA (UK Council for International Student Affairs) promotes and protects the needs of international students in the UK.
  • UKBA (UK Border Agency) provides information for people outside of Europe who want to study in the UK.

Welcome lounge

The Welcome Lounge will be open from Tuesday 10 September - Tuesday 24 September. It will be located on the fourth floor, North side of the Richmond Building in the Centre for English Language and Foundation Studies. It is here that you can come to meet staff and other students in a relaxed social setting with refreshments provided, and to have any questions or concerns answered by our friendly team of Student Ambassadors. This is where you will also be able to obtain letters for the banks, if you wish to open a new bank account, and collect your welcome gift and arrival information.

Welcome events

You can download our welcome events poster (PDF, 38.9Kb) from last year to get an idea of the the kind of orientation and social events that will be happening before classes start this year.

Welcome Reception

A Welcome Reception for new international students will take place on Wednesday 25 September from 2 – 4 pm, in The Great Hall, Wills Memorial Building. All of Student Services will be at this event giving out information, and it is a great chance to find out about what the University has to offer in terms of extra-curricular activities and support. There will also be snacks and refreshments provided by local Bristol suppliers!

Orientation for Study Abroad students

For each intake of new Study Abroad students a special orientation is organised. The orientation is run by the Study Abroad team and is designed to help you not only settle into Bristol but also meet the people who will be working with you during your stay.

While you are at the University you will be a 'Study Abroad' student. This will be your new identity for the year. Your academic home will be the Study Abroad Office and the responsibility for your academic work lies with the personnel of the Study Abroad Programme.

At the morning session of the orientation day programme you will be advised how to go about registering for classes. Please do not visit any departments until orientation is over.

Orientation dates for 2013/14

  • September entry: Monday 23 September 2013
  • January entry: Friday 24 January 2014 (TBC)

Registration Guide for Erasmus and Study Abroad students (1 MB, PDF)

Registration

Study Abroad students need to register online and then collect your student card on arrival. Full instructions will be sent to you in the post prior to arrival.

If you need some help with your online registration there will be computers and student helpers available in the International Welcome Lounge when you arrive in Bristol (for students arriving in September).

Orientation Week

Orientation forms part of your Introductory Week in Bristol. Orientation will be filled with meetings on social as well as academic aspects of your time in Bristol, and will include lunch and a campus tour. After orientation, you will register for classes in your various departments, sign up for clubs and societies and settle into Bristol.

For those coming for the full year and Fall Semester, the Students' Union Fair, held in September each year, will give you a chance to join as many of the 150 clubs and societies as interest you. Union clubs are probably the best place to meet informally with British students - a shared interest, even if only vague, is a great ice-breaker. For students arriving in January the Students' Union representatives will meet with you to help you find the groups and activities which you would like to join. Clubs and societies are eager to welcome new members all year round. This social involvement is the single most significant feature in helping you feel at home, and the Union representatives are always on hand to advise - the International Office is housed in the Union building along with all the Union offices and services, enabling Study Abroad students to make good use of the combined facilities.
