Entry requirements for undergraduate courses

All applications must be made through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS). The UCAS code name and number for this University is BRISL B78.

The minimum entrance requirement for our undergraduate (Bachelor) degree courses is 75% as an overall average, but potential candidates should note that the majority of our courses require average Year 12 grades of 80% or above.

Entry requirements will vary depending on the undergraduate course of interest, the Year 12 examination board and subjects taken. If you would like advice relating to your specific qualification, please contact us.

Typical offers for CBSE and CISCE/ISC boards are from 85% as an overall average, with specific subject grades required for certain courses. For example, most of our Engineering courses would require 85-88% overall, plus 85% in both physics and mathematics.

At Bristol we do consider Indian Year 12 candidates for our Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Science courses, but would expect candidates to achieve at least 90% overall with 95% in chemistry and at least one other science. Competition for these courses is exceptionally strong and achieving these grades does not guarantee an interview.

Some schools make conditional offers that include a specified grade in Year 12 for English language, but other schools may instead require candidates to take an English language test such as IELTS or TOEFL in addition to their Year 12 English exam.

Please note that competition for places at Bristol is very strong, so the achievement of the qualifications listed above does not guarantee that an offer will be made. We aim to get you a response as quickly as possible to help you plan your studies.

Entry requirements for postgraduate programmes

You can apply online for all our postgraduate programmes.

The standard requirement for entry to a taught masters programme at Bristol is an undergraduate (Bachelor) degree that is equivalent to a UK Upper Second Class degree (also known as a 2:1).

Most of our taught Masters programmes require a first class pass (60% or higher) from an Indian university. The more competitive programmes may require a first class pass with distinction.

We are aware that at many of India's elite higher education colleges it is very rare to be awarded a first class pass, especially in social science or humanities subjects. For this reason, a number of our departments may be willing to consider candidates from top colleges who have achieved 58% or above.

Candidates wishing to be considered for research at Bristol must have a first class pass in their Indian Bachelor degree and some research experience. It may also be advantageous to have completed a Masters degree with research elements.

English language requirements

At Bristol we understand that the majority of candidates from India have been taught in English throughout their education. A number of our departments will therefore accept Year 12 English language grades of 75% or 80% in lieu of another English test such as IELTS or TOEFL. However, this is always at the discretion of each department, and many do still require Indian candidates to provide additional evidence of English language aptitude, usually in the form of one of the two internationally recognised examinations mentioned above.

For further guidance, please consult our English language requirements page.
