Application process
The Study Abroad programme is best suited for undergraduate students in the third year of a four-year degree or second year of a three-year degree.
Entry requirements
All applicants must:
- Be currently enrolled in an institution of higher education
- Have completed at least one year of study at University level by the start of their Bristol studies
- Have a 3.2 GPA or its equivalent for Arts and Social Sciences, 3.5 GPA or its equivalent for Science and Engineering subjects. If you do not meet the GPA requirement (3.2 for Arts/Social Sciences, 3.5 for Sciences), please provide a statement on why your average does not accurately reflect your academic ability.
- Be proficient in the English Language, satisfied by one of the following:

- English is your native language or the language of instruction at your University
- 6.5 IELTS in all bands, TOEFL 600/250/100 with 5.0 TWE to study most subjects
- 7.0 IELTS in all bands, TOEFL 627/263/107 with 5.0 TWE to study Law or Economics
- 7.5 IELTS in all bands, TOEFL 650/280/114 with 5.0 TWE to study English Literature or Drama
Application Procedure
- Complete the online application
- Print off your completed online application form, sign it and have your Exchange or Study Abroad office sign it
- Submit the required supporting documents, listed in the Application Checklist & Proposed Study Plan (115 kb Word doc). All supporting documents must be in English.
- Students studying at Bristol for one semester only must also complete and submit the Visa Request Form (71.5 kb Word doc)

Study Abroad and Exchange coordinators may email applications to swap-in@bristol.ac.uk. Applications emailed directly from students will not be accepted. If you are applying directly to Bristol (not through your University or sponsor), you must post your original supporting documents to the address above.
Applications will only be considered after all supporting documentation is received.
Application deadlines
All supporting documents must be received in the Study Abroad Office by the deadlines below. Applications will not be considered until all documents are received.
STABEL programme: 1 May
Full Year and Autumn Semester (October entry): 15 May*
Spring Semester (January entry): 15 September (we are unable to accept any applications after this date)
*Late applications will not be guaranteed housing and will be considered after 15 June.
Offers
Offers are sent out on a rolling basis. We aim to make an admissions decision within 4 weeks of receiving a completed application. Once offered a place, you will be required to formally accept your place. Accommodation, immigration and pre-arrival information is sent after you formally accept your offer.
You should also be ensure that you have followed any and all application procedures required by your home Study Abroad office, and liaise closely with them throughout the process.
