If your course of study does not include a period of study abroad but you would like to add an international angle to your degree then here are a few ideas for you. We have only listed a few programmes that we know to be of a high quality and where funding is available. There are an enormous number of companies and institutions providing summer programmes and internship opportunities so if you are looking for something specific try the Careers Service.

International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experience (IASTE)

The International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experience (IASTE) is a student exchange programme with over 80 member countries. It arranges paid work experience placements over the summer vacation in science, technology and engineering in related industry, research institutions and the public sector. Students apply through the British Council and if successful are matched with relevant job opportunities. For further information please see IASTE.

RISE Research Internships in Science and Technology

RISE is a summer placement programme for undergraduate students from the UK, US and Canada in the fields of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth Sciences and Engineering. It offers opportunities for undergraduate students to work with research groups at universities and top research institutions across Germany for a period of 1.5 to 3 months during the summer. RISE interns are matched with doctoral students who they assist and who serve as their mentors. All participants receive a grant from the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD) to help cover living expenses, while partner universities and research institutes provide housing assistance. Seoul National University International Summer Institute (SNU ISI)

SNU ISI offers the opportunity for students to study at Korea’s most prestigious university on a five-week summer programme led by internationally distinguished professors from around the world. The academic programme is conducted entirely in English and includes topics based around East Asian history, politics and economics. In addition it offers full immersion into Korean culture and society with field trips and social activities arranged. Accommodation can be provided in a student dormitory. Study China Programme

The Study China Programme is a government sponsored inititiative to encourage British students to engage more with China. The SCP is a short programme that fits into academic holidays with tuition, accommodation and excursions being funded by the government.
