If you've got questions about working or studying abroad, why not take a look below:
This depends on the course that you are studying.
Different University of Bristol departments have different arrangements with specific universities overseas. Most departments offer the opportunity to study abroad somewhere, but your course of study determines where in the world you could go.
View the list of study abroad destinations and click on your course of study to find out where you could go. If your course is not listed there, we recommend that you speak to your personal tutor about opportunities for going abroad.
This depends on the agreements that we have with partner institutions.
Most departments offer the opportunity to study abroad somewhere, but your course of study determines where in the world you could go.
Opportunities to work abroad as part of the Erasmus Work Scheme exist in the 27 countries of the EU, some EFTA countries (Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein) and Turkey.
View the list of study abroad destinations and click on your course of study to find out where you could go. A list of countries where you can work abroad is also available.
This is usually in the penultimate year of your course.
If you are on a 4 year course, you would go abroad in your 3rd year and apply in your 2nd year.
If you are on a 3 year course, you would go abroad in your 2nd year and apply in your 1st year.
It is not advisable to go abroad in your final year due to other important academic commitments.
Please contact your departmental Year Abroad Coordinator with any academic queries.
You will have to discuss your courses with your department and get their approval.
The courses that you take while studying abroad should be broadly relevant to your degree course here at Bristol. You will need to discuss specific course choices with your departmental Year Abroad Coordinator and secure their approval.
For students going to Europe, you will normally need to complete 30 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) credits. For students going to non-EU destinations, you must take a "full-time" course load.
Please contact your departmental Year Abroad Coordinator with any academic queries.
Unfortunately this can be complicated, it depends upon whether you are a Home / EU student or an Overseas fee payer and how long you are away for.
If you are awarded an exchange place to study abroad, you will not have to pay tuition fees to your host institution overseas.
Questions about your University of Bristol tuition fees should be directed to your Faculty Office and further information can be found at the Income Office website.
We are not able to confirm receipt of individual documents due to the volume of paperwork that we receive.
We will let you know if something is incomplete on a document that you submit to us as soon as possible. It is important that you include your contact details on any and all documents that you send to us.
If you believe you have sent in your documents but haven't been paid your grant, then contact us to make sure we have received them all successfully.
You will receive your grant in two instalments, usually at the start of your placement and a later top-up payment.
If you have completed and returned the necessary paperwork to the International Office by the 15th of a given month, you will receive your grant by the end of that month. Once you have completed your placement, you may receive the top-up element of you grant, but different procedures are in place for those on work or study placements.
Full guidance is available from our grants for those studying abroad and grants for those working abroad pages.
You are able to make changes in the length of your placement if your host company agrees it to, but it may have financial consequences for you.
If you extend your placement, you will need to send us a new Training Agreement to cover the whole period, not just the extra time.
If you shorten your placement, this will have financial consequences and if you complete less than 3 months, your placement will not count as part of the Erasmus programme.
We have prepared full information on how shortening / extending your placement affects your grant.
There is support in place for you to help you find a suitable work placement for your Year Abroad. This can be found at the Careers Service.
They have access to search databases for placements and hear from companies who are looking for interns.
To find out more about the support available and how to book a work experience appointment, visit the Finding placements section of the Erasmus Work placements website.
A Convention de Stage / Convenio is a document often requested by French / Spanish companies in order to confirm a work placement arrangement.
This document is NOT a requirement of the Erasmus programme, but we can help you to provide this document for your host employer.
We have written a full guide on how to complete a Convention de Stage / Convenio.
In your pre-departure pack there will be a letter confirming all the details of your year abroad, we specifically provide the letter for this purpose, so it should be sufficient. If you have any trouble or your LEA requires more information put them in contact with us.
