Student laptop clinic

Clinic starts again on Monday 19th April

What is the laptop clinic?

The laptop clinic is a free service to help students at Bristol. Bring your laptop along to the clinic and we'll try and solve the problem while you wait.

What can we fix?

We will look at both Windows & Mac laptops. We can only help with software and configuration problems. We can’t solve every problem, but are happy to look and see what we can do. If we don’t fix it we can also provide advice on what to do next, information to help you fix the problem yourself or suggestions about who else you can contact.

We don't repair hardware, only software. For example we can't upgrade the memory on your laptop or change the hard drive.

How does the clinic work?

On a first come first served basis. You must stay at the clinic with your laptop.

Who can use the clinics?

All University of Bristol students. Clinics are not available for staff, visitors to the University or members of the public.

When are the clinics held?

All clinics start at 2pm and finish at 5pm prompt.

  • Weekdays from Friday 8th January until Friday 22nd January
  • Weekdays (except Thursdays) from Monday 25th January until Friday 5th March
  • Continuing after Easter from Monday 19th April until Friday 11th June

Please note: We can't promise to see everyone, especially if you arrive towards the end of the afternoon. We finish at 5pm prompt.

Where are the clinics?

Clinics are held at The Hawthorns Student Refectory. The main entrance to the Refectory is down steps from Woodland Road. An alternative accessible entrance is available from Elton Road.

What should I bring?

Please bring your laptop and power supply. If any Windows or recovery CDs were supplied with your computer please bring them too. If you want help copying files from your computer please bring a large memory stick or USB hard drive.

What other help is available?

You can telephone the IT Help Desk. That’s the first call for help, but for more detailed problems where we need to see the computer students can also try the laptop clinic. Staff also have IT support in their department and faculty, but this generally doesn't cover home computers.

We also have a list of local firms offering home computer support.

For information for home users including hardware, software, security, Internet access & library resources see the home computer users website.

University of Bristol - The Alumni Fund
The Student Laptop Clinic was established in 2008 through the kind donations of Bristol University alumni. These donations enable Bristol to go from strength to strength through advancing technology and improving facilities for both staff and students. The people working on the clinic are a combination of other Bristol students and IT support staff.
