This information is correct for students using ResNet in academic year 2012/13. If you are starting before academic year 2012/13 see Key information for academic year 2011/12 for more appropriate information

What is ResNet?

ResNet provides Internet access to rooms in University accommodation[1]. ResNet is a very high speed connection, faster than you are used to at home. You connect to ResNet using a network socket on the wall in your room or via the wireless signal in the majority of rooms.

What packages are available and what does it cost?

ResNet Standard is suitable for email, web access, academic research, and YouTube clips. From academic year 2012/13 ResNet Standard is included in your accommodation fee.

ResNet Max has a bigger usage allowance for people who want to transfer large amounts (e.g. heavy users of BBC iPlayer or iTunes Movies). Please see ResNet Packages for costs.

In addition ResNet Wireless is currently available in over 80% of residences. Wireless is very convenient, especially if you want to connect more than one device, or wander with mobile devices between your room and other areas. There is no extra charge for ResNet Wireless.

How do I upgrade my ResNet package?

If you find that ResNet Standard's generous weekly usage limits are not quite enough then you can upgrade at any time using My ResNet

Will my computer work with ResNet?

Most modern computers will work with ResNet. If your computer is more than 5 years old consider getting a new one. You can also connect more than one computer, or a computer and games console, but may need extra equipment.

What should I do before arriving in Bristol?

Please check that your computer is up-to-date with all essential security updates. Use Microsoft Update to install updates for Windows, but you need updates for all your other software too. You should also have up-to-date anti-virus software, but you can get this for free.

What do I need to bring with me?

Please bring your Windows CD or computer manufacturer's Recovery CD or Restore CD. These are essential to restore your computer to the factory-supplied state if you encounter a problem with it.

What about computers from overseas?

All laptops have international voltage-sensing power supplies which will work with the 220V supply in the UK. You will need a travel adapter to connect to the 3-pin UK sockets.

Will ResNet work immediately when I arrive?

Yes. The ResNet service is already live and ready for you.

What if I arrive early?

ResNet 2012 goes live in September, slightly before almost all students arrive. However if you arrive before that you can still connect to ResNet. You get a one week free trial, but if that's not long enough you can pay for an extra week or two at a cost of £8 per week.

How do I set up ResNet?

We provide a cable and easy to follow instructions for every student, ready in your residence when you arrive. The main steps are:

  • Connect the cable provided in your pack to the network socket on the wall or connect to the resnet-instructions wireless signal.
  • Activate your connection using your favourite web browser.

What if I need help?

If you need help getting connected please telephone the ResNet start of term hotline: open Monday-Friday on 0117 928 9001, or 89001 free from your room. If your query is less urgent you might prefer to email us at resnet-help@bristol.ac.uk
