Microsoft Lync provides facilities including instant messaging (IM), multi-party audio and video and desktop sharing. In addition it can provide presence indication in other Office products and Sharepoint.
The Microsoft Lync (formerly Office Communications) Service has been in use in the University since 2009, primarily as a complement to the University's Remote Desktop Services. On the Remote Desktop Services and most Windows 7 systems Microsoft Lync provides Desktop Sharing between users and Service Desk staff.
