Junk email (spam)

What to do if you receive spam

  • Never reply to junk email, even if it asks you to reply to be removed from the mailing list.
  • Don't click on any links in the message.
  • Move the email to your Gmail 'Junk E-mail' folder (drag and drop)
Please note: the 'Spam' folder in Gmail is 'intelligent' in that it learns what you consider to be spam based on what you move into the folder and automatically filters email based on this. You should check your spam or possiblespam folders every now and then to make sure that legitimate emails have not been automatically moved by mistake.

How to avoid getting spam

  • Keep your email address secret - only give it to people and organisations you trust and from whom you would like to receive mail.
  • If providing your email address is optional, then don't disclose it.
  • Check what you are disclosing on social networking sites - and check what information they will disclose.
  • Have a 'spare' email address that you only use when signing up to services.
  • Don't publicise your University email address on web pages.
