EndNote is the University of Bristol's recommended bibliographical management software - see the illustration below for an overview of what EndNote can do for you. There are two versions of EndNote available at UoB:
There are two distinct versions: EndNote Desktop and EndNote Web. Undergraduate and taught postgraduate students are directed to EndNote Web, which is available free to University of Bristol students. Academics, researchers and postgraduates are directed toward the Desktop version, which they are able to have installed on their UoB PCs.
Users of EndNote Desktop may consider creating an EndNote Web account as well. References can easily be moved between the two versions. Using the web version is a useful way of collecting references when you can't access the Desktop version.
Students and please note: although EndNote Desktop is available via the Student Remote Desktop, there are known problems with remote installations of EndNote that can cause linked Word files to corrupt. It is recommended that students use EndNote Web and not any versions available via remote desktops. EndNote has the following to say: "EndNote wasn't designed to work with remote desktops or via emulation/virtualisation technologies. It's designed to be installed on every machine."
See a comparison of the EndNote Web and EndNote Desktop.
Please note: with EndNote Web your references are saved on a remote server in the USA, and are no longer entirely under your control. There may be privacy implications to this because US government agencies are permitted to access your data at any time, without notice.
