Connecting your own computer to University filestores

Bristol staff and students should be able to access their filestores using the eduroam wireless service on campus, and the UoB VPN Service from home.

Staff: Do you have access to personal or confidential data? Take extreme care when processing data. Personal data can only be processed under strictly limited circumstances, and never on computers not owned by the University. See Processing data.

Windows XP / Vista / 7

To connect to the fileserver

  1. On XP, click Start, Run
    On Vista / Windows 7, click the Windows button and find the Search text box
  2. You need to enter a line like the one below in to the text box
    \\ServerAddress\ShareName

    Check below, or ask your IT support staff what ServerAddress and ShareName should be. Common examples are:
    • MyFiles, O drive:      \\ads.bris.ac.uk\filestore\MyFiles\staff or \\ads.bris.ac.uk\filestore\MyFiles\students \YOUR UoB USERNAME 
    • Senate House, H drive:      \\mis-app1.admin.bris.ac.uk\users
    • DFS:      \\dfs1.bris.ac.uk\DeptFS
  3. Click OK or press Enter/Return
  4. Your files should be displayed
  5. If you are asked for a username and password, try your username and password for the server or your username with a UOB\ prefix in front, eg UOB\username and your normal password.

Mac OS X Lion and newer

  1. In the Finder, click the Go menu, then Connect to Server
  2. You need to enter a line like the one below in to the text box
    smb://ServerAddress/ShareName

    Check below, or ask your IT support staff what ServerAddress and ShareName should be. Common examples are:
    • MyFiles, O drive:      smb://ads.bris.ac.uk/filestore/MyFiles/Staff[ or Students]YOUR UoB USERNAME 
    • i.e.   smb://ads.bris.ac.uk/filestore/MyFiles/students/aaa22222
    •  
    • Senate House, H drive:      smb://mis-app1.admin.bris.ac.uk/users
    • DFS:      smb://dfs1.bris.ac.uk/DeptFS
  3. When prompted for domain, username, and password, these should be UOB for the domain and your normal Bristol username and password.

Mac OS X, Snow Leopard and earlier

Click "Go:" on the toolbar and choose "Connect to Server"

 

Enter the path for the filestore you want to access:    smb://studentfiles/myfiles/<UOBusername>  (Students)  or smb://stafffilestore.ads.bris.ac.uk/myfiles/<UOBusername> (Staff). 

 

You will be prompted for your credentials.  Enter these in the format   UOBusername@ads.bris.ac.uk

or UOB\username
