Our Erasmus Exchange Partners

lapide erasmoFor each university exchange there is a Erasmus Office and a University Co-ordinator and, in most cases a personal contact in a University department. The latter will help you with academic choices but it is the Erasmus Office that will deal with practical matters such as welfare and accommodation. Please go to see the Departmental exchange organiser when you arrive and call to say goodbye and thanks before you leave. Also, look out for your local Erasmus/Erasmus student network – they often run very good social events and visits outside your university town.

Please click on the relevant university link for the name and address of your exchange co-ordinator; contact details for the Erasmus office; and a link to the university web site for all other information.

Choosing your Courses

As a Erasmus exchange student, you may register for any of the numerous courses taught in the relevant Faculty of your host university. Courses generally consist of lectures and many of them are attended by very large numbers of students. You are strongly encouraged to study some options on Italian literature, history or linguistics. Beyond that it’s up to you to find courses that interest you and which are well taught, and to tell us what you are doing. You may find a course which is obscure but interesting, and attended by a smaller group of students. The exchange co-ordinator may be able to help you with this, but it’s also worth asking the Italian students with whom you come into contact.

You may have some difficulty at first in understanding the lectures but an intensive language course is usually provided by the host university, and with practice and determination you will find that your comprehension will soon improve. We strongly urge you to persevere with your chosen courses and sit the examinations. Although examination marks will not count towards your Bristol degree, they could help in borderline cases and will look impressive on your CV.

Dott.ssa D’Alessandro normally sends out forms in June/July regarding accommodation and Italian language courses (free) - these must be returned by mid-August, but it is advisable to send them to her well before the end of July to improve your chances of getting a room.

Alessandro, 1, 20123 Milano. Tel. (02) 503 13586 Fax (02) 503 13563 Email: caroline.patey@unimi.it

Please note that the Language Course for the first semester may start in mid September and for the second semester at the beginning of February. Accommodation is organized by the ‘I.S.U.’(an office of the region of Lombardy) for the university (for the address see below). They have a small hall of residence (only 30 rooms) where you would share with an Italian. You are more likely to obtain a place if you are in the office on 15 September. After that date, you will probably end up in one of several other halls of residence, which are run privately for the I.S.U., and where you will share with a foreign student. You will need to pay a deposit and pay rent a month in advance but it is worth starting off in university accommodation, even if this is only for the first few weeks, until you find something privately. See Secondamano a free advertising paper for adverts, as well as University notice boards.

The I.S.U. also administers the university Mensa (refectory), serving two meals a day, for which they issue an ID card (small deposit payable). You may buy a 3 course meal at the Mensa or when closed, at a designated restaurant.

Address of the I.S.U.: Via Clericetti 2, 20133 Milano, tel. (02) 7005 11882 or 239 56211. The office is open 9.00-12.30 and 13.45 - 15.00 (Mon -Thurs) and 9.00 – 13.30 (Friday).

Travel: a student travel card (tessera), obtainable from the ATM office on presentation of Erasmus certificate and passport, allows a month’s unlimited travel. For details, see the ATM website
