Dan Schaffer: "Reversing trustee mistakes" Distinguished Alumni Guest Lecture Series

16 March 2015, 1.00 PM - 16 March 2015, 12.40 PM

Dan Schaffer (LLB 1986)

Wills Memorial Building, Room 3.31

As part of the Distinguished Alumni Guest Lecture Series, Dan Schaffer (LLB 1986) solicitor advocate, partner Herbert Smith Freehills, sometime tutor in trusts Merton and Balliol Colleges Oxford, chair of the Univeristy of Bristol law school advisory board, will be giving a lecture entitled: "Reversing trustee mistakes "

Dan lives in his central London with his French wife and three teenage boys, none of whom are interested in Trusts (yet).

Dan regards it as a privilege and pleasure to remain actively involved in the Law School throughout a career. He encourages all current students to remain engaged with the School after graduation.

Dan is chair of the advisory board here at Bristol University Law School. He fell in love with Trusts law at Bristol where he studied 1983 – 86, winning the Simmons scholarship.

Encouraged by Keith Stanton he went on to Oxford to take the BCL (First Class) in 1987 and then teach Trusts law at Merton, Balliol and St Hilda's Colleges. He has also lectured on Trusts at Cambridge, LSE and Warwick universities. He sits on the Chancellor's Trusts Law Committee.

Dan has, since qualifying as a solicitor in 1990, specialised in pensions trusts. He advises some of the biggest and most complex trusts in the country like the £25billion Railways Pension Scheme and Electricity Supply Pension Scheme.

He does both contentious and advisory work. He is a solicitor-advocate and hopes one day to go to the Chancery Bar. He is head of the pensions trust team at the global law firm Herbert Smith Freehills, where he is a partner. Herbert Smith Freehills sponsors the prize for the student who comes top in Trusts.

When Dan is not organising the Distinguished Alumni Lecture Programme and working with the UBLC and the School on other ways to help strengthen still further the School's fantastic reputation, he is down here cycling with fellow 83-86 alumnus Michael Ford QC (seen eating frites after completion last year of the Tour of Flanders with Dan). They are riding Liege-Baston-Liege in April. And Roscoff to Santander in July.
