Tim Herrington (LLB 1975)

As part of the Distinguished Alumni Guest Lecture Series, Tim Herrington (LLB 1975) Judge of the Upper Tribunal, member of the University of Bristol law school advisory board, will be giving a lecture entitled: " Insider Dealing"

Tim graduated in 1975 from Bristol with a first in law. His first career was with Clifford Chance, the international law firm, where he became a partner in 1985. He specialised in company and financial services law, being one of the first City lawyers to specialise in the regulation of financial markets following the establishment of a comprehensive structure for the regulation of City professionals following the passing of the Financial Services Act 1986.

On retiring from Clifford Chance in 2005 Tim joined the City Regulator, then the Financial Services Authority, and became Chairman of its Regulatory Decisions Committee, the independent committee which decides whether to impose fines and banning orders on those found to be in breach of the regulatory rules.

In February 2012 Tim embarked on his third career when he was appointed a Judge of the Upper Tribunal (Tax and Chancery Chamber). He hears cases brought by those who are challenging the disciplinary decisions of the City Regulators (now the Financial Conduct Authority and the Prudential Regulatory Authority) as well as references from the decisions of The Pensions Regulator and tax appeals.
