Professor Paula Giliker has been elected Chair of the British Association of Comparative Law (BACL). BACL promotes the study and research of comparative law within the United Kingdom.

Professor Paula Giliker has been elected Chair of the British Association of Comparative Law (BACL).  BACL promotes the study and research of comparative law within the United Kingdom in a number of ways: organising an annual conference, running an annual postgraduate training programme, circulating information on conferences and other comparative law events, and in nominating national reporters for the four-yearly International Congress of Comparative Law.  Its membership consists of representatives from all UK universities.  Paula, Professor of Comparative Law at Bristol, looks forward to continuing BACL's work in promoting comparative law scholarship in the UK and beyond.

Further information

The function of the British Association of Comparative law (formerly the UK National Committee for Comparative Law) is to coordinate and encourage comparative legal research and teaching throughout the UK. Its membership is drawn from many of the UK’s Law Schools.

The BACL regularly hosts or co-hosts workshops for postgraduate students to encourage the use of comparative law in research.

The BACL holds an annual symposium on a comparative law theme, usually at the time of the Society of Legal Scholars annual conference. The 2010 symposium was held on 13 September during the Society of Legal Scholars conference at Southampton University on the topic of Human Rights and Comparative Law.

The BACL is affiliated with the Académie internationale de droit comparé/International Academy of Comparative Law and coordinates UK representation at the international congresses which the Academy hosts every four years. The most recent international congress took place in Washington, USA, in July 2010, hosted by the American University Washington College of Law, the George Washington University Law School, and Georgetown University Law Center.
