Article 50 triggered – formal Brexit negotiations begin

Press release issued: 29 March 2017

Prime Minister Theresa May made political history today when she began the formal process of Brexit by triggering Article 50. But what exactly does that mean for the country and what is the process moving forward?

Professor Philip Syrpis is a Professor of EU Law at the University of Bristol Law School and has published academic research on a wide range of subjects relevant to Brexit.  On the triggering of Article 50, Professor Syrpis said:

We have heard a lot from Theresa May's government about the complexity of the task ahead, and of the need not to show our negotiating hand too early. We are however starting the process without a clear sense of what the rules of the game are.
