  • Inside an Impressive Mind: Law School alumni advice on how to excel 4 December 2018 On 12 November a panel of prize-winning Law School alumni who excelled here academically and in their early careers gathered in the WMB Reception Room to deconstruct what tutors and employers consider makes an impressive mind. The evening’s topics ranged from tips on how to approach essay and exam questions, boost critical thinking, building confidence through developing good oral communication skills, preparing for interviews, and the importance of mental and physical wellbeing.

  • Law Clinic student event report: Osborne Clarke training 21 November 2018 On 13 October and 3 November 2018 the University of Bristol Law Clinic’s annual training took place at the Osborne Clark Office in Bristol. In this event report Student General Secretary Rebecca Slade writes about the sessions, which gave Law Clinic’s members the opportunity to receive training in vital law clinic procedures as well as a chance to immediately put the training advice into practise with the firm’s partners and trainees.
  • Professor Eirik Bjorge appointed Inner Temple Academic Fellow 20 November 2018 The Law School’s Professor Eirik Bjorge has been awarded the prestigious three-year role of Academic Fellow of the Honourable Society of the Inner Temple, as part of the Inner Temple's Academic Fellows Scheme aimed at recognising outstanding academic contributions and bringing together legal practitioners and academics.
  • Forum (Non) Conveniens in England: Past, Present, and Future: new monograph by Dr Ardavan Arzandeh 19 November 2018 We are pleased to announce the imminent publication of Dr Ardavan Arzandeh’s monograph, Forum (Non) Conveniens in England: Past, Present, and Future. This is the first monograph-length study devoted entirely to examining the forum (non) conveniens doctrine’s past, present, and future from the perspective of the law in England.
  • Law Clinic Welcome Night 2018 15 November 2018 On Friday 26 October the University of Bristol Law Clinic annual Welcome Night was held in Priory Road Complex Lecture Theatre. The night aimed to introduce the new student committee, academic directors and administrative staff to new and returning Clinic members, as well as informing them of Clinic procedures and opportunities beyond the Clinic.
  • Overcoming Education Barriers and Achieving Diversity 15 November 2018 New student led initiative, the ‘Unity and Diversity in law’ committee hosted an engaging conference namely “Overcoming Education Barriers and Achieving Diversity” on 10 November in the Great Hall at the University of Bristol. This diversity initiative which is the first of its kind at Bristol was sponsored by the University of Bristol Law School, Burges Salmon LLP, Travers Smith LLP, Ashurst, BCLP, Eversheds Sutherland LLP and Strive.
  • Dr Michael Naughton introduces new book on Barry George case 6 November 2018 Dr Michael Naughton, Reader in Sociology and Law, has written the foreword to a new book by Michelle Diskin Bates, the sister of Barry George who was wrongly convicted and imprisoned for the murder of BBC TV presenter Jill Dando.

  • Law Clinic shortlisted for Best Contribution by a Pro Bono Clinic Award 1 November 2018 The University of Bristol Law Clinic has been shortlisted for ‘Best Contribution by a Pro Bono Clinic Award’ within the 2018 Annual LawWorks Pro Bono Awards, which celebrate achievements made in enabling access to justice and the supporting of individuals, communities and not-for-profit organisation through legal pro bono work.

  • Centre for Health, Law, and Society celebrates first anniversary 8 October 2018 The Centre for Health, Law, and Society (CHLS) celebrated its first anniversary with an annual inter-disciplinary symposium and public lecture in the Law School on Tuesday 2 October 2018. Organised by CHLS member Dr Catherine Kelly, the symposium brought together academics from a range of disciplines to discuss doctors and the art of persuasion.

  • Bringing Ethics to Public Health Law and Practice 2 October 2018 This September, Professor John Coggon, co-director of the Centre for Health, Law, and Society at the University of Bristol Law School, spoke to national and international public health and policy audiences on public health ethics and law.
  • STUDENT NEWS: Law Clinic application process open 1 October 2018 The University of Bristol Law Clinic provides students with an opportunity to gain a real-life experience of law, offering free legal advice and support to members of the public under the supervision of Law School staff. The 2018/19 application process for a place at the Clinic starts today.
  • Looking Back, Looking Forward: Placement at the University of the Gambia 25 September 2018 The Human Rights Implementation Centre (HRIC) has had a collaborative relationship with the Faculty of Law at the University of Gambia (UTG) since 2011. Each year the HRIC has facilitated a postgraduate student of the University of Bristol Law School to teach law at the UTG for an academic year.   • CHLS Success at the BMA Book Awards 11 September 2018 Professor John Coggon and Professor Keith Syrett, members of the Centre for Health, Law, and Society (CHLS), celebrated the start of September as their book 'Public Health Law—Ethics, Governance, and Regulation, co-authored with Dr A.M. Viens at the University of Southampton, was Highly Commended at the BMA Book Awards.
  • Q&A with Law School Employability Adviser, Jo Cooksley 30 August 2018 Joining us this year, Jo Cooksley is the Law School's new Employability Adviser; a role developed following student feedback regarding the need for greater legal specific careers support within the School. After previously practising law and working in a role mentoring trainees at CILEX (professional body for Chartered Legal Executives), Jo will be providing specialised careers support to all law students, offering 1:1 development sessions, workshops, tailored CV and application support and more.
