The Law School is delighted to announce the launch of a new centre of research. The Centre for Private and Commercial Law (CPCL) is an international centre of excellence for critical scholarship, teaching and public engagement with private and commercial law.

Led by Professor Paula Giliker and Dr Eleanore Hickman, the Centre brings together world-class scholars working in the fields of private and commercial law, promoting doctrinal, collaborative, socio-legal and inter-disciplinary approaches.

Building on the expertise of members in the fields of contract, tort, unjust enrichment, property, commercial, insurance, and company law, the Centre provides a supportive environment to develop projects and ideas, a platform to disseminate work, and opportunities to engage with the wider legal community, notably with policymakers and practitioners.

Centre and book launch event

Join us to celebrate the formal launch of the new University of Bristol Centre for Private and Commercial Law on 8 February 2023, 5-7 pm, in the Lady Hale Moot Court at 8-10 Berkeley Square.

The launch event will introduce the new Centre, its goals and objectives, centre members and their work. This will be followed by the book launch of Vicarious Liability in the Common Law World (Hart, 2022) edited by Professor Paula Giliker, Centre co-director.

The publication responds to uncertainties as to the operation of vicarious liability in 21st century tort law by looking at key common law jurisdictions and asking expert scholars to set out and critically analyse the law - identifying factors influencing change and the extent to which case-law from other common law jurisdictions has been influential.

A panel of speakers, comprising of Professor Giliker, Professor Jason Neyers (University of Western Ontario), Dr Desmond Ryan (Trinity College Dublin), Dr Mat Campbell (Glasgow), and Dr Andrew Bell (Bristol) will discuss the book’s unprecedented access to case-law, doctrinal debates and comparative reflections on vicarious liability from across the common law world.

To attend this event please register for a place via Eventbrite. This is a hybrid event.
