Summary

Adam has been working as Research Assistant on the ESRC project ‘Ordinary Lives: Class, Reproduction and Everyday Life in Contemporary Britain’ in SPAIS with Professor Harriet Bradley and Dr Will Atkinson. Through a fine grained multi method, qualitative approach, distinctive, everyday lifestyle patterns within family life, are explored in relationship to gender and class reproduction. This study reflects his central research aim, to improve understanding of processes that produce and reproduce social inequalities, through class analysis.

Adam has a particular interest in qualitative research methods and social theory to interrogate class(ed) processes. His nearly completed PhD looks at the learning of class in a working class community. It is a processural account of social reproduction, replacing the archaic concept of socialisation, from a child centred perspective, through a focus upon everyday informal learning, intersubjective practices and social identification, within a Bourdieusian framework.  Ethnographic methods and the development of interdisciplinary thinking tools enable the examination of their lives within family, neighbourhood and organisational settings. An intra class continuum is constructed to explore intra class differences between young working class people, degrees of inequality, position and power within social space.

Adam has previously worked at Leeds University as researcher on an ESRC Research Methods Project ‘Developing methodological strategies to recruit and research socially excluded individuals, networks and groups’, that critically explored the concept of social exclusion. He also taught ethnographic research methods there.
