Keith Syrett rejoined the University of Bristol Law School in 2017 as Professor of Health Law and Policy. He is a graduate of the universities of Oxford (BA, 1987), Yale (MA, 1990) and London (LSE) (PhD, 1997). He has taught full-time at the University of East Anglia and Cardiff University, in addition to Bristol. He has also been a Visiting Lecturer at the Universities of Ankara, Gothenburg, Oxford, Toronto, the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and Erasmus University Rotterdam. In 2017, he was awarded a prestigious Hood Fellowship by the University of Auckland.

Keith’s research lies at the interface of law, political science, ethics, and regulatory studies. He is globally recognised for his work on the rationing of healthcare resources and the law, the subject of his book, Law, Legitimacy and the Rationing of Health Care (Cambridge University Press, 2007), and has published extensively on topics relating to judicial intervention in allocative decision-making, the human right to health, and health technology assessment as an activity of the modern state. He is also a leading figure in the evolution of public health law as a subject of academic research and study both in the UK and worldwide, and is co-author of Public Health Law (Routledge, 2017).

Keith is a member of the Executive Committees of the International Society on Priorities in Health and the British Association for Canadian Studies, sits on the World Health Organization Technical Consultation Group on Health Systems Governance, and is a member of the Editorial Board of Medical Law International. He is current co-lead of the University of Bristol Elizabeth Blackwell Institute research strand on Global Public Health and also sits as an academic member of the University Board of Trustees. Keith is a Fellow by invitation of the Royal Society of Medicine and of the Royal Society of Arts, in both cases in recognition of his academic work.
