Postgraduate courses and degrees

We have a substantial, international postgraduate community, undertaking a range of taught and research-based programmes under the guidance of the School of Law's expert staff.

Our postgraduate degrees

A majority of our taught postgraduate students are enrolled on one of our specialist LLM programmes, which enable students to specialise in areas such as Commercial Law, European Legal Studies, International Law, Maritime Law or Public Law.

We also offer a popular fast-track two year postgraduate law degree for non-law graduates, the MA in Law; and the new interdisciplinary MSc in Socio-Legal Studies.

LLM by Advanced Study

The LLM by Advanced Study is a taught Masters degree which offers opportunities for specialist legal study, and the development of research skills through the production of a dissertation.

MA in Law

The MA in Law is an accelerated, fast-track, two year, full-time senior status postgraduate degree in law. The specially devised curriculum builds on the fact that students have already benefited from a university level education by enabling them to acquire a qualifying law degree in only 21 months, rather than the three years it would normally take to obtain an LLB.

The Socio-Legal Studies programme offers a range of units, suitable for graduates from a very wide range of disciplines (including Arts, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, and Law), who have an interest in the way law works in society.

MSc in Socio-Legal Studies

Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.)

The M.Phil by research is a higher degree in law, involving a minimum period of study of one year for full-time students and two years for part-time students. It is awarded on the presentation of a dissertation on a specialist legal topic.

PhD Programme

The PhD is a higher degree in law, involving a minimum period of study of three years for full-time students and six years for part-time students.
