We know that studying can be stressful, especially around exam time, so we aim to provide you with opportunities to make relaxation a part of your time spent in the library. Working constantly without breaks isn't great for your productivity: when you're tired and stressed, you can't take information in or do your best work. So relax and be productive!

Relaxation space in the Arts and Social Sciences Library

We’ve created a dedicated calm space on the first floor where you can take a break away from your study in order to recharge and refresh. Within the pleasant woodland and meadow-decorated space you’ll find rocking chairs, blankets, comfortable floor pillows, a family of stress-busting cuddly animals and an assortment of materials designed to enhance your sense of wellbeing. You’ll find it located in the cube on the first floor of the library that was previously home to several photocopiers, straight ahead as you enter the floor from the central stairwell.

Wellbeing events in the Medical and Veterinary Sciences Libraries

Jigsaws / chess games / displays

Date: ongoing
Location: ground floor, Medical Library

Take a study break and while away a few minutes with our communal jigsaw puzzle, or take a turn in our chess game. The library also features a changing display of interesting books and items from Special Collections for you to browse (our current display features artwork created by Medical students).

Reading Well for Mental Health scheme

Location: Medical Library, Veterinary Sciences Library

The Reading Well for Mental Health scheme is now available to all students and staff at the University.

Libraries across the UK hold copies of the 37 titles on the scheme’s booklist, which provide adults with mental health needs with advice, information and support including self-help. The scheme complements existing local health services and is a simple way of delivering prevention and early intervention, self-help care and support.

Copies of the Reading Well books are available from the Medical Library (located opposite the Information Desk) and Veterinary Sciences Library (located at the start of the book run), but can be requested and borrowed by any member of the University with a Ucard / Library account.  Many of the titles are also available as eBooks via Library Search - simply search for the author and title and follow the eBook link.

Reading Well follows clinical guidelines for the treatment and support of mental health needs. The books were selected by health professionals following a rigorous and evidence-based approach (see the Protocol for Book Selection).

Reading Well Mood-boosting Books

Location: Veterinary Sciences Library

Reading Well Mood-boosting Books is a national promotion of uplifting titles, including novels, poetry and non-fiction. The books are all recommended by readers and reading groups. Reading Well Mood-boosting Books are available to borrow from the Veterinary Sciences Library - and can be requested by anyone in the University. These were bought at the request of students, and we are happy to help.
