Check your journal

Funder open access policies usually require that the journals which funded authors publish in meet certain conditions. These may include:

  • maximum embargo lengths for articles which are self-archived in an institutional repository (green route);
  • specific publication licences and deposit in discipline-specific repositories (gold route).

If your paper acknowledges support from a research funder, you should look to publish in a journal which complies with your funders’ open access requirements.

The following online tools can help you to determine whether a journal meets your funders’ requirements:

  • Sherpa/FACT- Checks journal titles to see if they meet the requirements of RCUK and COAF funders;
  • Sherpa/RoMEO- Contains details of the self-archiving policies for thousands of journals;
  • Sherpa/JULIET- Summaries the open access requirements for many major funders.

These services are updated frequently, but may not always give the latest information on policy compliance for every journal. If you are in any doubt about a particular journal, refer directly to the publisher’s policy.

Funding requests for RCUK- and COAF-funded authors

If you are applying to the Open Access Team for funding to cover publication fees for papers with RCUK or COAF funding, please ensure that the journal meets all your funders’ requirements for gold open access. We are unable to approve payment for gold open access in journals which do not satisfy funder requirements.
