Short Loan Collection

Short Loan Collection (SLC)

Most of the our libraries operate a Short Loan Collection (SLC) of the most heavily used books and journal articles. Some general information follows that will be relevant to most of these. For further details go to the Short Loan Collection (SLC) page for the particular library, using the links in the how to add an item to the SLC section below.

  • SLC items can normally be reserved on the Library Catalogue for a time slot in the future; see how to reserve / book a Short Loan Collection (SLC) item. This can be useful for planning your study.
  • SLC loan periods vary depending on the library, and include time slots during the day, and overnight loans, which become weekend loans on Friday or Saturday.
  • SLC loans can be renewed if not required by another reader but the renewal must be made with the item at the Issue Desk you borrowed it from.
  • Fines for SLC items brought back late are particularly heavy.

How to find an SLC article

Sometimes journals are referred to as serials or periodicals in the Library. Journal articles in the Short Loan Collection (SLC) are the only journal articles listed on the Library Catalogue (http://www.lib.bristol.ac.uk/ALEPH/) individually that you can find using the journal article title or journal article author.

  1. To search for a journal article that is kept in a SLC you should use the Library Catalogue.
  2. If you know the author and title of the article try searching as you would for a book. Alternatively, you could search for the journal title by using the 'journals & series titles' option in the browse enquiry. In the case of a journal article in a SLC the journal title, date, year and page numbers will be displayed.
  3. Click on the library name to see the location of the item (you should find that it is in a Short Loan Collection)

Note that some of these journal articles may also be available electronically, see how to find a particular journal article for advice on how you can check this. If you have problems finding a journal article please ask library staff for help.
