Statistics

Online statistics

Many sources of statistical information are available online, and often this is the best source for up to date information.

  • 'Material type--Statistics' category on MetaLib (easily accessed via the Quick search > Articles & databases option of the Library home page)
Provides access to many online statistical information sources for the United Kingdom, plus statistics from major international organisations including the European Union, United Nations, Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development  (OECD), and World Bank.

Printed statistics

The largest collection of statistics in the University Library is held in the Arts and Social Sciences Library.

  • Arts and Social Sciences Library statistics collection
Housed on the first floor of the Arts and Social Sciences Library, this contains detailed statistics relating to Great Britain, particularly official and quasi-official statistics; annual and other publications of the major international organisations (UN, OECD, World Bank, IMF, EU); the annual statistical abstracts (summaries) from OECD countries and other major economies.

The collection is strong for material since 1970 and has in addition much earlier material, including the censuses of Great Britain and Ireland from the early 19th century and runs of official statistics from 1900. Results of the censuses for 1981 and 1991 are on CD-ROM (not networked).

Guides, bibliographies and indexes to the collection are shelved at the end of the collection and include:
    • a subject index, bound in green
    • Guide to official statistics
    • International statistics sources
    • Eurostat index for EU statistics
  • Statistics held in other branches
Other branches, including Education and Medical, have statistics collections. For details of these libraries go to the branch libraries option. If you find a statistics publication on the Library Catalogue you will be given an indication of the location and the loan period.

If you would like to see a government publication that is not held by the University Library or available online you should consider using the Inter-Library Loan service.
