The University is investing in additional study spaces in our libraries and new contemporary learning spaces. The Library is introducing self-service to make it easier for students to get out books when they want them and has recently introduced 24/7 during exam time at the Arts & Social Sciences Library.
The lower ground floor of Senate House is being refurbished over the summer to provide an additional 152 flexible study spaces which will be available the latter part of October 2013. The study space will accommodate differing study needs throughout the year and will offer silent, quiet and social study.
Updates on progress will be posted here periodically and on the library twitter: @BristolUniLib.
In 2012, the Hawthorns Refectory and Study Lounge were converted to provide over 175 additional study places. Facilities include student computers, wireless coverage, open desks and group study rooms. Both spaces have a cafe and are open Monday to Friday, 8am–9pm. The Hawthorns will also open weekends during the exam period.
Recent and ongoing refurbishments in several University libraries are improving facilities and creating flexible spaces suited to different styles of learning. Further details regarding facilities and progress can be found on individual library web pages:
Self-service will be introduced in four of our main libraries: Arts and Social Sciences, Medical, Queen's Building, and Wills Memorial libraries.
The self-service project is phased over a five-year period and provides the efficient self-issue and return of library material minimising transaction times and enhancing the library experience.
Preparations for the introduction of self-service have been progressing over the last two years with Wills Memorial Library and the Arts and Social Sciences Library being the first libraries to ‘go live’ this summer.
