Inter-library loans FAQs

Who can use the service?

This service is available to all academic members of staff, postgraduate and undergraduate students. Non-academic and retired members of staff should talk to the Inter-Library Loans staff in their branch library before making requests.

Can I use the service in support of research for commercial purposes?

You cannot use the standard Inter-Library Loan and document supply service in this case. Copyright legislation makes a distinction between copying for non-commercial research purposes and copying for commercial research purposes. If your request is for a copy needed for research for commercial purposes please go to the copies for commercial research page for advice and instructions.

Where can I obtain an Inter-Library Loans voucher?

You can 'pay' for the item when it arrives by giving the Library an Inter-Library Loan voucher. Details of who holds these vouchers for your department are generally available through the Subject pages (see the 'Inter-Library Loans and ILL vouchers' section of 'Getting started') or you could ask in your department office. Alternatively, you can pay the charge (£8 including VAT) by cash or cheque. Members of staff who are not attached to an academic department should contact Inter-Library Loan staff at bris-ill@bristol.ac.uk to discuss payment.

Can I borrow UK theses?

The British Library offer an online thesis supply service called EThOS (Electronic Theses Online Service) which can be found at http://ethos.bl.uk/. On the EThOS webpage you can register, search through thesis titles, and order a thesis without using inter-library loans. This service is free for an electronic copy of a thesis although you may also order other formats for a small charge. If you are unable to obtain a UK thesis through EThOS, please contact Inter-Library Loans at bris-ill@bristol.ac.uk.

How many requests may I make?

At present we impose a limit of 20 requests which you may have in process at any one time, including any such items currently on loan to you. Once you have reached this limit you will not be able to make any more requests until you return an Inter-Library Loan which you have borrowed, or receive an item which you may keep, such as a photocopy of an article.

How do I enter photocopies into library stock?

Photocopies added to stock must either be produced in accordance with the Copyright Licensing Agency's Licence, or be obtained from a copyright-cleared source, such as the British Library Document Supply Centre's Copyright-Cleared Service, or be produced with the written permission of the rights holder. Contact the Document Supply Supervisor Pete Barrett for further information.
