Reservations

How to reserve a book or journal

Books and journals can be reserved if they are on loan to another library user. If the existing due date is longer than 7 days from the date of the reservation, it will be brought forward accordingly.

  • Check the Library Catalogue to see if the item you want is currently on loan. If so, select 'Reserve' from the Holdings screen and follow the instructions displayed. You will need your University of Bristol username and password to make reservations, and to check them subsequently via the 'My Library Account' option.
  • An email notice will be sent to you when the book is available.
    • Standard and 7 day loan books will be kept at the issue desk for you for 7 working days. Books with shorter loan periods will be kept for one working day.
    • You will need to collect the book from the branch library where it is usually held.
    • Users with special difficulties accessing library resources (including part-time, distance & placement users) may contact the Additional Library Support service (AddLibS) to use the AddLibS postal loan service.
  • If the book you want is not on loan and you cannot find it on the shelves, please ask about it at the Issue Desk.

How to book a Short Loan Collection (SLC) item

SLC items can be reserved for a specific time slot up to 2 weeks in advance, using the Library Catalogue (except for Veterinary Sciences Library SLC items which can only be booked at the Issue Desk).

  • Find the item you want on the Library Catalogue and select 'Booking' from the Holdings screen. You will need your University of Bristol username and password to proceed to the SLC advance booking screen.
  • The SLC advance booking screen offers time slots up to two weeks from the day of reservation, and a choice of up to three slots within each day. Click ‘request’ next to the time slot you want and you will receive confirmation that the booking has been completed.
  • Only one consecutive advance booking is available per person for each book, but books may be reissued if they are not required by another user. SLC books must be returned to the appropriate branch Issue Desk for reissue; they cannot be renewed online.
