Details of disabled user support in branch libraries
General information for each branch library
Library staff are always willing to provide assistance where possible, so do not hesitate to ask for help should you need it. For long term requirements please contact Mary Lockwood, the library disability coordinator. Mary will be able to advise and assist you with your support requirements. Wherever possible, it is always advisable to contact us in advance to discuss your specific requirements and this enables us to provide a better service. The following facilities are also available:
- A telephone renewal service for disabled users is available, for further details please contact Mary Lockwood.
- Hearing induction loops are installed in all of the branch libraries.
- Coloured overlays and magnifying sheets are available in all branch libraries.
- Texthelp Read and Write and Inspiration Mind-mapping software is available on all library and computer centre PCs.

Arts and Social Sciences Library
- On-street parking is available on Tyndall Avenue subject to availability. Please display blue badge.
- The library has both steps and ramped access at main entrance. There are six steps up, with handrails. The ramped access is to the left of the library entrance.
- There are two sets of wide automatic doors to enter and exit the library welcome area.
- There are three access security gates, the left hand gate is wide access. Please swipe Ucard for access.
- Vibrating pagers are available from staff at the welcome desk for loan to Deaf and hearing-impaired library visitors. The pagers pickup a radio signal from the fire alarm and alert you to an emergency. We also have red flashing beacons to supplement audio alarm and pagers.
- A hearing loop is installed at the welcome desk, issue desk and the computer training room.
- The disabled toilet is situated on the ground floor with automatic door access.
- There is a low level photocopier situated on the ground floor of the library. (Coloured and off-white paper is available on request for use in the photocopiers, please contact the Library Disability Coordinator for details).
- There is a private study room on the first floor of the library which can be booked for up to two hours at a time. Please register with the library disability coordinator to use.
- There is a cafe area on the ground floor of the library.
- A lift is available for disabled users within the library. Please note that it is not an evacuation lift and therefore cannot be used in an emergency evacuation as a means of escape.
Assistive Technology room
The Assistive Technology room (AT room) is located on the ground floor of the Arts and Social Science Library. There are seven PCs, one CCTV magnifier reader and a TV with DVD and video players. Access is by Ucard for registered users only. To register to use the room please contact the Library Disability Coordinator, Mary Lockwood.
Four of the PCs have a flat-bed scanner attached. Two PCs have black on yellow keyboard overlays. (Other combinations are available on request - please contact Mary Lockwood.

Inspiration Mind-Mapping software and Texthelp Read & Write are available on all branch library public PCs. Please bring in headphones to use with Read and Write.

Chemistry Library (Worsley Chemical Library)
- There are automatic doors at the entrance to the library.
- A hearing loop is installed at the issue desk.
- A CCTV magnification reader is available. Please ask staff for details.
- A height adjustable table is available.
- There is a ramp and handrail leading to the Chemistry 'cloisters'.
- There are automatic doors at the main entrance to the Chemistry building leading to the porter's office.

Education Library
- There are several designated disabled parking spaces in the car park at the rear of the building.
- The library has level access and automatic doors.
- A hearing loop is installed at the Issue Desk.
- A height-adjustable table with a PC workstation is available.
- A writing slope is available for use in the library. Please ask staff for details.
- A disabled toilet is available opposite the library.

- Disabled parking is available with handrail to access slope.

- A wheelchair lift is available down to the library entrance.
- A disabled toilet is available.
- A height adjustable table is available.
- A hearing loop is installed at the Issue Desk, Enquiry desk and Training rooms.
- Staff lifts are available for disabled users within the Library.
