Access to other university libraries through SCONUL

The Society of College, National and University Libraries (SCONUL), operates various reciprocal access schemes between a large number of higher education libraries of the UK and Ireland, making it easier for students and academic staff to use libraries conveniently near to home or work throughout the year.

SCONUL Access

This scheme enables most academic staff, postgraduate students, and registered part-time, distance learning, and placement students, to borrow material from other SCONUL Access member libraries. In addition, there is a provision for registered full-time undergraduate students to use other libraries on a reference-only basis.

Please note: Not all SCONUL Access member libraries are taking part in the borrowing scheme for full-time postgraduate students. You are advised to check whether your institution is a member of the scheme on the SCONUL Access website.

Staff and students must first register with SCONUL Access by applying online and be authorised by their home institution before visiting other participating libraries. Both home ID card and SCONUL Access email of authorisation must be presented on each visit. Please note: the online application process was introduced in January 2013. SCONUL cards are still in circulation and will be accepted in place of the email of authorisation.

SCONUL Vacation access

Undergraduate students and postgraduate students following taught courses at higher education institutions in the UK and Ireland whose libraries are members of the SCONUL Vacation Access scheme will normally be granted reference use of other higher education libraries free of charge during the vacations of the host institution and on production of a valid student ID card.

Important information for SCONUL users coming to UoB:

SCONUL users are able to sign in using both their home ID card and SCONUL email of authorisation (or SCONUL card).

If you are eligible to register for borrowing, you need to do so at the Membership Office, entrance of the Arts & Social Sciences Library, open Monday to Friday, 9am–1pm and 2–4pm (subject to staffing). Please email lib-access@bristol.ac.uk to make alternative arrangements if this is not convenient.

Please note that you will not be able to borrow books on your first visit which is for registration purposes only.
